In this portrait, I tried to use symmetry and value to correctly depict myself. I used materials of charcoal to outline myself and later on color in the shadows and define the structure of my face.
To draw a self portrait, I had Mona Lisa by Leonardo Da Vinci in mind. Leonardo Da Vinci was an amazing multi talented artist of his time period, capable of capturing details in his architecture, sketches, and painting, I wanted to demonstrate/mimic these skills as well. Mona Lisa is the perfect portrait of a person where he drew every detail he possibly could. Knowing that Leonardo Da Vinci was drawing someone else, I needed to implement this detailed skill in my portrait as I sketched myself. Making this piece, I started off from my chin to the forehead. I had to decide to round my face, or thin it. When making a realistic self portrait, it's very important to draw what you see in the most detail possible. After I was done sketching, I had to choose words which represent who I am. I have always grown up aspiring to grow and improve as a colored person hoping to make an impact in the world. If I could change anything, I would balance out my face. Looking at the portrait, my right side is uneven compared to the left side. To balance it out, next time, i will only draw one side and try to make it more symmetrical next time. If anything, the unsymmetrical face shows that I am developing as a person and am still finding my spot in life as growing boy and black boy. This piece connects to my other pieces as it is a portrait of myself. This self portrait starts off my musical theme, as it represents me.

For this piece, I used a new medium I have never used before known as photo shop. It was very difficult. Since I have never used it before, I needed a lot a guidance in using it, which felt weird at times, but overall really helped. Inspiration for this piece was derived from my house hold, and my community. Living in an African house hold and community allowed me to see the importance of my home land and the importance drums have in our culture. No artist really gave me this idea or any inspiration for this idea.
As I was being introduced to this new medium, I also improvised this piece as I was being instructed and guided through photo shop. It started with just wanting to have drums inside the continent of Africa, but then it turned intro a whole statement of "letting the beat touch you or inspire you. My idea transformed into focusing on African drums and there important presence in my culture, and honestly the entire world. If I could do one thing over, I would change my background into the Nigerian flag. This would be just to create an allusion of where I am from. This piece connects to my other pieces as it includes another instrument that I grew up with an is part of my personal identity.

With this piece I thought that I had the intent of making a collage, but it didn't turn out how I wanted to. It only shows that I still am in the process of mastering art and all sorts of styles.
Particularly for this piece, I grabbed some inspiration from modern day social media. On someones's snap chat, I saw that they painted a beautiful picture of an African women. When I saw this, I just wanted to make a piece which represents Africa, and the struggle it goes through.
To make this, I sketched some photos of Africa and a mouth on a different paper and cut it out and pasted it to a Styrofoam board. I decided to have a green Styrofoam board because it represents money. I pasted Africa and a mouth because it represents how the continent of Africa is being drunken from or milked for the ridiculous money in resources and culture it contains.
I honestly wouldn't redo anything, instead I would add a lot more. I would want to actually paste prop money on the board to better symbolize the money Africa is flowing in and is being stripped of. Next time, when I create a piece, I will put deeper thought into symbolism and interpretation.
This piece connects to my pieces as this is another representation of me. The link is the continent of Africa as it links back to who I am. Growing up in an African house hold, my parents always stressed to me to remember where you come from and never let it be stripped from me.

To make this piece, I used only colored pencils. As someone beginning, I needed to get used to understanding the process and style of using colored pencils and layering from light to dark colors. It was difficult, but I believe that I got the hang of it as my teacher critiqued it little by little.
I was inspired by none other ,but Mrs. O'ryan herself. She described to me how to make a rich, beautiful piece of art with colored pencils. She demonstrated how texture and value plays a big role in pieces with colored pencils. She explained that, the shades and strokes in which your pencil goes are very important for a great piece with colored pencils.
My theme was music. I personally love musical instruments and the entire concept of music. With that, I took an instrument I have been playing since I was in 2nd grade, the guitar. My guitar represent my passion for music and when it developed. Drawing this guitar was pleasing as It is a part of who I am.
With making this piece, I made mistakes in maintaining the piece. If i could redo anything, i would've taken a picture of the guitar in a more creative environment for me to not only draw the guitar, but the beautiful environment with it.
Overall, this piece relates to my other pieces as it portrays a musical instrument that I have developed to love and was my introduction to the sound of music.

1. Define which techniques you tried and mastered? Struggled?
For this project, I really wanted to focus on blending colors, especially contrasting hot, warm, and cold colors. Initially, I wanted it to be a perspective type of art work, where one is just looking down a road of colors. It was interesting, and I think visually pleasing, until the same red, orange, and blue were used over and over again. I didn't really know how to use any other colors until I used green and violet as shading colors, which actually helped it be more visually stimulating.
2. How did you draw inspiration from other artists techniques or aesthetics in your work? In what ways did you derive meaning or gain historical perspectives from their work? Why these artists?

3. Describe the evolution of your piece. Decisions made. Compositional elements.
4. If you could consider doing something over, explain why you would do this and what you would do next time?
If I had the opportunity to change anything, than I would've changed the colors of each notes to see how warm/hot colors would look in their place, or vice versa. This piece was an exploration of colors and how well they combine and contrast.
5. Elaborate on how this piece links with your other pieces? What is the common thread?
Making this piece, I used images of musical elements like notes, instruments, and genres to connect to the theme of music. This piece is a exploration in shapes and their placement, and how colors contrast and connect with shapes.
